Fast Snake

This snake was fast and not a bit intent on hiding. It raced around a 10 foot square of ground like it had lost something and was frantically looking for it. Perhaps I had disturbed a meal. I think it's an Eastern Rat Snake, which would make it hungry for some small mammal or perhaps a bird.

It was not in the least bit scared of me and would race towards me and then back off. They're not to be feared, although at over 5 feet long, I kept my distance.    

A Jewel in the Shade

This pretty snake was heading for the shade after I walked up the path and disturbed it as it was enjoying the spring sun.

Not Sleeping Yet

Mid trail and not much bigger around than a blade of grass, this snake sat looking at me. In fact the first indication that I had that he was there was that I felt his eyes upon me.

It was a warm November Day and he was a baby fighting his winter nap---putting it off for another day.

Snake!

This was a new hatchling that I found on the trail. Barely bigger than a night crawler, this little one was at risk of being trampled by joggers passing by.

And he wasn't too happy about being moved to the safety of the grass, either. But I moved him anyway as he hissed and struggled all the way.  

Wednesday Warm Up---Snake

Beautifully patterned this Bullnosed Snake winnowed its way through the grass one August day. It was the first time I had ever seen this type of snake in Indiana.

It was like a jewel---must have just recently shed its skin---so bright and new.

Up too early

Even though Friday was a nice day for February, I wouldn't describe it as summer like.

This snake was out catching some rays of the February sun. It acted like it had been aroused too early. It was slow moving and its eyes were cloudy.

Last year, during a February thaw, I came across a nest of around twenty of these guys just waking up and moving into the river.

Spring must be coming shortly.  

Snake

This spring before the last snow melted, I came across a dozen snakes like this one in a hole in the river bank. They were just waking up from the winter.

This snake was enjoying the summer like weather we're having into October this year.
